flags of the world web quest

INTRODUCTION


The flag of a country , its colours and forms usually can give us some information about the country and its history as it usually reflects some episode in the history of this given country. Moreover the changes it could have undergone throughouth the time usually correspond to some historical events. We are going to study some of the most important flags in the world, their origins and changes throughout the history and all the meanings contained in them.

TASK

This webquest is made to be carried out by students in their last year in the highschool, that is 'segundo de Bachiller'. In groups of three choose three flags between the ones that appear in all the webpages included in this web page and make a power point presentation in English explaining their origins and meaning. If they have undergone any change throughout history explain it as well. Secondly, each member of the group has to write an essay in English as well of no more than 250 words about one of the flags choosen for the powerpoint presentation, its origins, meaning and changes of about.Finally they will have to make an oral presentation in English of the powerpoint in front of the class of no more than ten minutes.


PROCESS

1) Make a group of three and using the first link, watch the video and choose three flags appearing in it.
2)Use the second link in order to gather information relating to these three flags you have already chosen.
3)Make the powerpoint presentation in English.
4)Individually choose one of the flags explained in the powerpoint presentation. Each student must choose a different flag.
5) Write an essay in English about this flag of no more than 250 words. For this task you will need the second link and the third one. This last link will only lead you to the principal page of wikipedia. Then you will have to type for instance 'Irish flag' or 'Spanish flag' in order to get this information.
6)Make an oral presentation in English in front of the class about the powerpoint presentation of no more than 10 minutes. Each member of the group will explain the flag they chose for the essay.
7)The fourth link is an on-line dictionary you can use in case you do not understand any of the explanations.

EVALUATION

The final mark of the whole task will be calculated as follows. The oral presentation will count a 20%, the powerpoint presentation a 30% and the essay a 50% of the total mark.

CONCLUSION

With this web quest we have learnt a bit of history about some countries of the world by analysing the origins and changes of their flags. Thanks to the oral presentations the students will have an idea not only of the origins and meanings of the flags chosen but of all the ones chosen by their partners. With the links provided they will also have all the information they want about this subject in case they want to know more about a given flag or the meaning of any other flag as this subject usually captures their attention as there are a lot of interesting curiosities.
